The 1921 Morgan dollar could be considered a one-year type coin unto itself. After 1904, with national silver bullion supplies all but exhausted, the government suspended coinage of silver dollars altogether. In 1918, under the Pittman Act, more than 270 million silver dollars were melted down for bullion. By 1921, with the U.S. economy booming after World War One, the need for silver dollars became acute so the government resumed production for less than a full year with a few minor refinements, until the newly-authorized Peace dollar design was rolled out in late 1921.
True scarcity, excellent value
Today, 1921 Morgan dollars in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition are a great way to buy bulk silver. They offer all the benefits of silver bullion plus extra benefits like limited supply, collector demand, financial privacy, and extra premium potential because of scarcity, all for little additional cost. Unlike most forms of silver bullion, they are exempt from broker reporting requirements. In our opinion, they're better than bullion for bulk silver buyers.
Despite high mintage numbers, relatively few 1921 Morgan silver dollars survive today in AU condition. Most melted down during the silver booms of the 1960s and 1980s. We see far fewer 1921 Morgan dollars on the national market than Peace dollars, yet they're trading today for almost the same price. This true scarcity can mean higher premiums during periods of peak demand.
